3 Things That Could Cause Last Minute Moving Services To Cost More

Posted on

Finding a moving service to assist you with a move at the last minute can cause you to rush through the decision-making process. This is a stressful enough time for you and you don't need any surprise expenses popping up. Being aware of the possible additional fees that these moving services can charge before the truck is loaded will help eliminate some of the stress associated with your move.

Location

The location of your home and how it is positioned on the property could cause the cost of the moving service to increase. A few examples of this are:

  • No street level access – a lot of stairs will likely increase the cost of the service.
  • Inability to pull up to the home – if the truck cannot be parked directly at the home when being loaded, you could face an additional fee because it will take longer and more work to get your  things from the home to the truck.
  • Narrow streets – moving trucks can be very large. If the truck cannot make it down your street, you will face a substantial fee increase on your bill. The movers will have to load your things onto a smaller truck, transport it to where the larger truck can park and then load the contents into the larger truck. This will be repeated until your home is emptied.

Belongings

What you are moving could cause an increase in fees. If you have things like a slate pool table or grand piano, you should expect an additional fee for services. If the contents of your home are quite traditional – basic furniture and things, you really shouldn't expect an added fee for these services. This about it this way – if the things being moved have to be disassembled to be moved, are very heavy or are oddly shaped, you could face an added fee.

Insurance

If you have homeowners insurance, you may not need the added insurance for the contents of the moving truck. Take a minute to contact your insurance agent to find out if you are covered. In some cases, a temporary insurance rider will be needed to protect your things, but this won't cost much and is very easy to take care of.

These are the three main areas that you should expect the added fees to be included on your final bill. Take a look around and spend a little time talking with the moving service that you have hired even at the last minute so that you aren't caught by surprise.
